Solar Control Glass Roof Turns a Dated Conservatory into a Year-Round Room

The customer had a conservatory over twenty years old that was too hot in summer and too cold in winter. The frames had reached the end of their life and the space looked dated. They wanted a cost-effective upgrade that improved the look and made the room usable all year.

The Challenge:

The old structure struggled with temperature, so the room was rarely used. The design also looked dated, with a decorative ringbeam and rows of opening windows that felt out of step with the rest of the home. The old roof suffered from a green, mossy build-up on the roof that was hard to keep clean. Two rooms leading off the conservatory were dark. All of this needed to improve without spending more than was necessary.

Our Approach:

We inspected the existing base and walls and found them structurally sound, so we kept them to avoid unnecessary cost. Everything above the brickwork was replaced, including the window cills, so the room would feel completely new. For the roof we fitted active solar control glass. This keeps the room comfortable across the seasons, which was the main aim. The glass roof also lets in far more daylight than the old one, so the conservatory and the two rooms beside it are all much brighter. A self-cleaning coating deals with the green mossy build-up on its own.

The Results:

The work was completed in around a week, with little disruption. The result is a bright, modern room the customer can use in every season. The two rooms leading off it are noticeably lighter than before. The green build-up is gone, and the glass keeps itself clean. What was a tired and unused space is now a comfortable part of the home that works throughout the year.
