Roof and Frames Replaced in One Go, Turning a Sweltering Conservatory into a Lovely Garden Room

This older couple had a gable-fronted conservatory with a polycarbonate roof. It faced south over a lovely garden, but it trapped so much heat that it could not be used. That mattered, because this was where they could both enjoy the garden without going outside.

The Challenge:

The polycarbonate roof let heat pour in all summer and lost it all winter. The window frames were tired and starting to fail. The couple had a set budget, and they needed every pound to fix the problem for good. Their family lived away, so the daughter and son had to stay involved from a distance. The roof also had to meet a garage wall, which needed a box gutter and more detailed work than a standard roof.

Our Approach:

The base and walls were in good order, so we kept them. Replacing only the roof would have solved the heat. But with the frames already failing, the couple would have faced a second bill and more disruption within a few years. Doing both at once meant spending once. We kept a gable-fronted design. It gives a wide view over the garden and feels familiar, rather than like a standard conservatory. We surveyed the box gutter against the garage in detail, so it was right first time.

The Results:

The work was completed in one week. The new tiled roof is fully insulated, so the room stays cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Inside, the ceiling was plastered and fitted with downlights, so the room works in the evenings too. With new frames as well as a new roof, there is nothing old left waiting to fail. The couple now have a comfortable room to sit in and enjoy the garden all year.
