Orangery Extension Delivers a Light-Filled Room That Feels Worlds Apart From the House

The customer wanted more downstairs space for a growing family. They already had a converted garage and wanted to extend off it to create an additional sitting room. The aim was a room that could be used comfortably throughout the year, not just in the warmer months.

The Challenge:

The new room would sit in front of an existing back room that relied on natural light, so the design had to avoid darkening the space behind it. It also needed to tie neatly into the existing converted garage roof and work as a proper living space in every season. Because the property had already been extended, planning permission was required again before any work could begin.

Our Approach:

We explored two options. The first was a tiled roof extension fitted with roof glazing to let light through. The second was an orangery. We explained that the insulation performs the same across both, so the real difference was how much light reached the room behind and how the space would feel to sit in. The customer preferred the orangery. It ties neatly into the existing garage roof, keeps daylight flowing into the back room, and delivers a comfortable room that works in every season without compromising on warmth.

The Results:

Planning permission came through within the eight week window, and the build was completed in eight weeks despite difficult winter weather. A door that arrived made incorrectly was replaced quickly, with the customer kept informed throughout. The finished orangery gives the family a bright extra sitting room they can enjoy the garden from all year. They have decorated it beautifully with plants and personal touches, and a small step by the cat flap lets the family cat come and go.
