A Thicker Polycarbonate Roof Brings a Storm-Damaged Conservatory Back Into Use

The customer had an ageing polycarbonate conservatory that hail damage had left unusable. The early summer hailstones had punched holes through the old roof, so the weather was getting in. They wanted a modern, longer-lasting replacement that still came within their budget.

The Challenge:

The old polycarbonate roof had failed. Summer hailstones had left big holes in it, so the conservatory was no longer weathertight and had become a room they could not use. That also put the existing base and floors at risk, so a quick turnaround mattered. The customer wanted a warmer, brighter space than before, but all of it had to be done on a sensible budget. The garden was overgrown after a spell without maintenance, which made access challenging.

Our Approach:

We recommended replacing the roof with 32mm polycarbonate. There are two common thicknesses, 28mm and 32mm, and we chose the thicker option to add years of life to the room and give the customer peace of mind for the next ten to twenty years. We fitted a clear version rather than a tinted one. This lets more daylight into the lounge than the old roof did, while still offering some protection from the heat, so the room stays comfortable to use. Keeping the existing lean-to shape suited the property and helped control the cost.

The Results:

The whole job was installed within a week, so the base and floors were protected quickly and with little disruption. The customer has a weathertight room again, brighter than before and comfortable to sit in. Choosing the thicker roof means it should serve them well for the next decade or two. The site was left tidy, and the customer was ready to move back in and enjoy the space straight away.
