Insulated Tiled Roof Turns an Unusable Conservatory into a Year-Round Dining Room

Changing only the roof, not the whole structure, freed up budget for the wider refurbishment. On hot days the room now sits cooler inside than out.

The customer had an older conservatory on the back of the house with a polycarbonate roof. It was too hot in summer and too cold in winter, so the room went unused. It also sat at the centre of a much bigger refurbishment they were planning.

The Challenge:

The room was a good size, but the polycarbonate roof made it unusable for most of the year. The wider refurbishment meant the budget had to stretch across our work and all of the internal work too. There was also the space behind to think about. The kitchen and lounge had no windows of their own, so any new roof could not block the daylight reaching them.

Our Approach:

The structure itself was sound, so a full rebuild was not needed. The real problem was temperature, not the build. We kept the existing frames and replaced only the roof with a lightweight insulated tiled system, packed out with over 200mm of insulation. Two large Sky Vista glass panels were set into it so daylight still reaches the kitchen and lounge behind, and the high pitch keeps the ceiling open. This system is not the cheapest way to upgrade a existing conservatory. We use it because it lets us guarantee the outcome rather than hope for it.

The Results:

The box gutter was long enough to load the frames, so we fitted gallow brackets to carry it, worked through with our manufacturing partners. The finished room reads as a brand new part of the house. Light pours through the Sky Vista panels and on into the kitchen and lounge behind, which have no windows of their own. All of that came from a roof, at a fraction of the cost of a rebuild. In the recent heatwave, with the doors shut, it was cooler inside than out.

“The old roof made the room impossible to use, and we needed the rest of our budget for the work inside. Changing just the roof was the right call. It feels like a completely new part of the house, and on the hottest days this summer it has been cooler in here than out in the garden”

“Sensible advice, and they sorted a problem mid-build without any fuss. The room is comfortable now whatever the weather, and it has changed how we use the house”
