A New Home Came With a Cold, Noisy Conservatory. A Glass Roof Fixed Both

The customer had just moved in to find the conservatory on the back of the house was failing. It leaked, and the old polycarbonate roof left the room cold for half the year. Rain on that roof was so loud the kitchen next door became hard to use.

The Challenge:

The conservatory joins straight onto the kitchen, and the kitchen has no windows of its own. That meant the problems were never contained to one room. Noise came through in every shower of rain, and the cold came with it in winter. The customer wanted the space put right without spending a fortune. The husband works in building, so the pricing had to stand up to someone who knows what work costs.

Our Approach:

We quoted two options. Keeping the lean-to shape was the cheaper route, but a lean-to sits low and meets the flat roof above at an awkward angle. We put forward a double Edwardian instead. It gives the room more height, a better finish inside, and a far tidier junction with the flat roof. The customer chose it and was happy to pay the difference. For the roof we recommended solar control glass. Glass is much quieter in the rain than polycarbonate, it carries more daylight through into the windowless kitchen, and it reflects just over 82% of the sun’s heat.

The Results:

One side of the conservatory looks straight onto the boundary with the neighbour, so we fitted solid panels there rather than glass. That gave the room privacy and a usable wall the family can put furniture against. The fit-out took a week. The kitchen is brighter than it was, rain is no longer an event, and the room beside it is comfortable all year rather than for a few months.
