Modern Orangery Conversion with Dual Bifolds and Future-Proof Design

This customer approached us with an old wooden conservatory that had become unusable due to poor insulation and a leaky polycarbonate roof. At nearly 20m², the space had huge potential. The goal was to turn it into a light-filled, year-round room that could be further opened up to the house in a future renovation.

The Challenge:

The original structure suffered from the usual drawbacks: cold in winter, too hot in summer, and prone to damp. But it covered key rear-facing windows and needed to maintain natural light into the existing house. The customer also wanted the option to remove part of the house wall later on, so future-proofing the design was essential – without breaking the budget.

Our Approach:

We retained the original base and brickwork to reduce costs and disruption. Wide structural pillars were added to support a modern flat roof system with a large central lantern, flooding the space with light while maintaining excellent insulation. A tall internal ceiling allowed for a future RSJ install, enabling the client to knock through in a second phase. Dual sets of bifolds brought the outdoors in, and the dark grey finish gave the build a smart, contemporary edge.

The Results:

This orangery has completely transformed how the clients use their home. It’s a bright, impressive space that feels connected to both the garden and the house – but with future flexibility built in. The combination of dual bifolds, a lantern roof, and high ceilings creates serious wow factor, and the structure now performs year-round in all weather.
