Double Edwardian Conservatory Opens Garden Views Without Losing Character

This customer owns a characterful home with a beautiful garden on the Surrey–Sussex border. The existing rear lounge had limited connection to the outdoors, with narrow French doors and leaded glass that broke up the view. They wanted a space where they could enjoy the garden for most of the year without overpowering the house or losing its charm.

The Challenge:

The house had already been extended, so planning permission was required. Any new structure needed to feel light and respectful of the existing architecture. The customer wanted uninterrupted views into the garden while avoiding a glass-heavy appearance. Maintaining character was as important as improving light and usability. The space also needed to support practical features such as heating, electrics and a window cill for their plants – as they are keen gardeners.

Our Approach:

We recommended a double Edwardian conservatory to connect neatly onto the existing low-pitch extension while increasing ceiling height. This created a brighter and more open feel without dominating the rear elevation. A dwarf wall was introduced to ground the structure visually and remove any greenhouse appearance. Brickwork was carefully matched to the house and finished internally and externally to retain a rustic character. Clean glazing with large panes was specified to remove visual obstructions and frame the garden properly. The dwarf walls also provided ideal locations for sockets, heaters, and planting.

The Results:

The finished conservatory offers a calm, light-filled space that strengthens the connection between house and garden. Views are now clear and uninterrupted. The room feels open without overpowering the existing home. The balance of glazing, brickwork, and height ensures the character of the property remains intact. They were both particularly pleased that the conservatory enhances daily living while still leaving the garden feeling generous and usable.
